Reduced friction
It decreases the mechanical resistance between chain and sprocket, improving transmission efficiency.
Precision and Strength for Extreme Performance
Gandini Race front pinions, made from solid 18NiCrMo5 steel, are designed to deliver optimal performance, reliability, and durability. Featuring a lightweight design and superfinishing treatment, followed by case hardening and tempering, these pinions maintain their strength even in the most extreme conditions.
The final result is a mirror-like finish that reduces friction and enhances wear resistance.
The Strength of Gandini Front Sprockets
MATERIAL
Made entirely of 18NiCrMo5 steel, known for its excellent wear resistance due to its nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and molybdenum (Mo) content. Used in high-stress applications like gears, shafts, and front sprockets. 18NiCrMo5 is a case-hardening steel with an optimized composition for sprocket production due to:
✔ High fatigue resistance – Nickel provides toughness and impact resistance.
✔ Excellent wear resistance – Chromium and molybdenum improve surface hardness post heat treatment.
✔ Good machinability pre-treatment – Enables accurate tooth profiling before hardening.
HARDNESS
Case hardening and tempering create a hard surface layer (60–62 HRC) while maintaining a tough, impact-resistant core. This dual structure protects against chain wear without making the pinion brittle.
• Hardening: is a heat treatment that involves heating the steel to a specific temperature, followed by rapid cooling (in oil, water or gas) to obtain a harder and stronger structure. After carburizing, the front sprockets is hardened to obtain a martensitic structure, which increases wear and fatigue resistance. This combination ensures that the sprocket teeth resist wear from contact with the chain without becoming brittle, preventing sudden breakage due to high loads.
Guaranteed Strength in All Conditions
Cemented, hardened, and superfinished 18NiCrMo5 steel is ideal for racing front sprockets. It combines wear resistance, surface hardness, core toughness, and smoothness to maximize durability, enhance transmission efficiency, and ensure reliable performance under extreme conditions.
Superfinished Surfaces for Enhanced Performance
Isotropic Superfinishing, Surfaces and Superfinishing: The quality of a component’s surface directly affects its mechanical performance, wear resistance and durability. A surface that has less roughness reduces reduces friction, improves fatigue resistance, and prevents corrosion and premature wear. Isotropic superfinishing is a machining process that further improves surface roughness and dimensional accuracy, reducing micro-imperfections, increases the quality of contact between mated surfaces, reducing the risk of grip and improving smoothness. Advantages of Superfinishing: Maximum efficiency and durability After carburizing and hardening, superfinishing reduces surface roughness, improving sprocket performance:
It decreases the mechanical resistance between chain and sprocket, improving transmission efficiency.
Smooth surfaces reduce chain abrasion, increasing the life of the drive system.
It eliminates micro-cracks and roughness, reducing the risk of structural failure.
